Last Report of the Night

| August 29, 2012 @ 12:28 am

No additional word on the ship that had broken its moorings in the Mississippi near the Luling Bridge below New Orleans. Nothing on WWL or WDSU, so maybe it is an erroneous report or is under control.

Winds have been gusting to around 60 mph in New Orleans and the pressure is still falling. A heavy band is moving into the city now and winds just gusted to 76 mph at Lakefront Airport at 12:10 a.m. That is the first gust to hurricane force in the city.

The bad news is the center of the storm appears to be nearly stationary. The good news is that the center looks a little more ragged, which could be a signal of the beginning of a slow decline.

Convection around the center seems to be decaying slowly, potentially the result of dry continental air being entrainned into the system.

No problems reported at the 17th Street or Industrial Canals.

This is the last report of the night. James will be along the the Weather Xtreme video first thing in the morning.
