| September 5, 2012 @ 2:25 pm

A strong magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck this morning at 14:42:10 UTC (9:42:10 am CDT) in western Costa Rica at a location approximately 2719 km (1690 mi) from Huntsville. The quake focus was estimated at 40.8 km (25.4 mi) beneath the earth’s surface. There have been news reports of damages and utilities outages, and one fatality, in the area local to the quake epicenter.

In Huntsville, the initial seismic P (primary, compressional) waves began arriving some 5.5 minutes after the quake struck, followed by the initial S (secondary, shear) waves at +10 minutes. The larger, slower, surface waves began their arrival approximately 12 minutes after the quake, with a peak vertical ground movement of 1.5 millimeters (mm) measured at the AlabamaQuake seismic station during the surface wave passage. This is the largest ground displacement recorded in recent history at AlabamaQuake.

The local seismogram and quake epicenter location map have been posted to the AlabamaQuake website (https://alabamaquake.com) on the “Huntsville Seismograms” and “Recent Earthquake Maps” pages, and have been attached to this message.
