Late Evening Showers

| September 16, 2012 @ 9:26 pm

Late this evening, we are tracking an arc of showers and storms moving northward across Central Alabama.

They extend from southern Bibb and Perry Counties through Autuaga and Elmore Counties.

The activity is about 25 miles south of Calera and 50 miles south of Birmingham. It is pushing north at a little less than 20 mph, but I don’t think it will make it into southern parts of the Metro as it has already gusted out and should continue to weaken.

There is probably some lightning in Chilton and Perry Counties, but it isn’t showing up on my lightning detection.

Nearly a half inch of rain (0.45 inches) this afternoon at the Birmingham Airport in a shower that sat over the airport around 5 p.m. A harbinger of things to come, quite possibly, as heavy rain is expected Monday into Tuesday across much of Central Alabama. Will we see some tropical development in the northwestern Gulf? In any case, heavy rain will be the story for sure with Central Alabama slated to receive 2-4 inches of rain.
