Rain Out and Sunshine Returns

The latest edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below and on iTunes.

Wow, what a wonderful rain coming overnight like that. I found 0.86″ in my gauge this morning and I heard a few rumbles of thunder last night. Looks like it was a widespread and very beneficial rain with amounts varying between about half an inch and perhaps as much as 2 inches in a few spots south and southwest of Tuscaloosa.

Clouds were still evident over East Alabama, but it looks like we should be seeing a good deal of sunshine this afternoon. And that will help to warm us into the lower 70s. So it is shaping up to be a great weekend.

The forecast stays dry through Tuesday as the upper low which brought the overnight weather gradually moves off to the east and heads out to sea. That will clear the way for a ridge to move into and across the eastern part of the country. At the surface, the high edges off to the east of us by Tuesday allowing moisture return, but I think Tuesday will remain dry.

By Wednesday and Thursday, there will be some chance for showers with daytime heating and some little short waves embedded in the upper flow. Hard to time those very small features well. The next really good chance for rain is not expected until Friday. A strong trough situated across South Central Canada appears to have enough southern extent to drag a front into and through the area by Saturday afternoon. That paves the way for a good weekend for the Talladega races. One word of caution on that forecast – that is out a good seven days, so timing could change which might impact when the weather comes through Central Alabama. I’m sure the weather staff here will be watching along with thousands of fans.

Looking further afield, the pattern seems a bit less active as we look out into voodoo land. A front may move into and stall across the Southeast around the 29th, and then the GFS is forecasting a large ridge over the eastern portion of the country.

I’ll be headed up to Jasper today for the Home and Garden Show. If you are in that area, drop by and say hello. The next Weather Xtreme Video should be posted tomorrow morning by about 8 am. I hope you have a great Saturday. God bless.
