Only Isolated Storms Today

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

While SPC maintains a slight risk of severe weather for Central Alabama today, I really think many Alabama towns will remain dry. The surface boundary coming down in the northwest flow aloft will be working on a fairly dry airmass, but where storms can develop they might produce some small hail. The best chance of a storm this afternoon will be east of I-65, and even there the chance of one spot getting wet is only about one in five. Otherwise, the day will be partly sunny with a high in the mid 80s.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow will be pleasant over the northern half of the state; lots of sunshine, a little cooler, and less humid as the surface boundary drops into the southern quarter of the state. The high will be close to 80 degrees.

The front moves northward as a warm front tomorrow night, and moist air will be in place statewide on Thursday and Friday. This means a chance of scattered showers and storms on these two days, with the best coverage over South Alabama. The key word is scattered; no wash-out, just keep in mind a passing shower or storm is possible on both days. Models hint the best coverage will come on Friday.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: I still think the weather will be generally dry and warm. A few scattered showers are still possible Saturday, but an upper air ridge and the associated subsidence should squash any potential showers by Sunday and Monday, like a bug on a windshield. Afternoon highs will be well up in the 80s.

AT THE BEACH: Looks like a classic mix of sun and showers during the next few days… the sun will be out at times, and there will be a few passing showers and storms in scattered spots. Highs along the immediate coast in the low 80s, with mid to upper 80s inland. At this point it looks like very few showers down there over the holiday weekend ahead. The sea water temperature at Dauphin Island late yesterday was 77…

VOODOO LAND: The GFS still hints at a nervous Gulf of Mexico as we get into June and the hurricane season begins. The 00Z run takes the system west into the Bay of Campeche… still voodoo at this time.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will record a few episode tonight… it should be posted by 10:00 or so.

Today I will be speaking at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Calhoun County… look for the afternoon Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 or so. Enjoy the day!
