MARCH, OR JANUARY? The average high for March 25 is 70 degrees… some places are over 30 degrees below that level today. In fact, at Fort Payne, the 3:00 temperature is only 36 degrees… most places over the Tennessee Valley are overcast with temperatures in the 35-40 degree range with a biting northwest wind, pushing the wind chill index below the freezing mark. And, on top of everything else, we have had reports of light snow flurries across North Alabama today.

We will maintain the chance of light snow, or snow flurries across the northern third of Alabama tonight and tomorrow morning as a disturbance rounds the base of the cold, deep upper trough over the eastern half of the nation. There might be a dusting above 1,200 feet, but no accumulation for most places.

Tomorrow will be another blustery, cold, windy day with a mix of sun and clouds and a high in the 40s. Much like today.

COLD NIGHTS: We project a low at or below freezing both tomorrow and Wednesday morning. Tomorrow’s low should be around 32, but 20s are more likely early Wednesday with a clear sky and light wind. And, the colder pockets and protected areas should see yet another freeze early Thursday.

SLOW WARM-UP: We finally begin a warming trend Thursday afternoon as temperatures rise into the low to mid 60s. Mid 60s are likely Friday with a good supply of sunshine.

EASTER WEEKEND: I really think most of Alabama will be rain-free on Saturday; the sky will be partly sunny with a high in the upper 60s. Then, a cold front will bring a chance of showers, and possibly a thunderstorm on Easter Sunday. For now the risk of severe weather looks low, and the high Sunday afternoon should be in the upper 60s as we get ever so close to the 70s we should be seeing this time of the year.

Drier air returns to Alabama next week, and the air won’t be colder. In fact, the GFS is printing a high of 74 degrees for Birmingham on Monday April 1. Let’s hope that holds up.

AT THE BEACH: The good news is that the week will be dry on the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores, but the weather will be cold for March. The high each afternoon through Wednesday will be close to 60, with morning lows in the 30s (yes… 30s on the beach!). Temperatures warm up a bit by the weekend, with a high around 70 degrees possible by Friday and Saturday. The sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 60 degrees (F).

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
