TOO COLD FOR LATE MARCH: If you didn’t like the weather yesterday, you won’t like it today. We are beginning the day with freezing temperatures for most places across North and Central Alabama… Birmingham at 5am reports 31 degrees with a wind chill index of 23. The chill extends way to the Alabama Gulf Coast; Jack Edwards Airport at Gulf Shores is at 37 degrees… while Mobile reports 33. You can’t escape the cold.

Today will be windy and cold with a mix of sun and clouds; like yesterday we won’t get out of the 40s, and the wind will make it feel colder.

ANOTHER FREEZE: The wind finally dies down late tonight, and tomorrow morning most places will wind up somewhere between 25 and 30 degrees. Then, with sunshine in full force we start a slow warming process tomorrow afternoon with a high in the 50s.

WARMER DAYS: We go back into the 60s on Thursday and Friday; the sky will be sunny on Thursday. A few clouds will invade the state Friday, but the day should be dry with showers developing to the west over Arkansas.

EASTER WEEKEND: The GFS is printing 71 degrees Saturday, and 72 on Sunday, and that is something to celebrate. But, moisture levels will be on the rise, and while any showers on Saturday should be few and far between, we do expect a good chance of showers or thunderstorms Sunday ahead of a surface cold front. For now it looks like the best chance of rain will come Sunday afternoon into Sunday night; the severe weather threat looks relatively low for now with not much upper support. Rain amounts should be generally 1/2 inch or less.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS hints we will be dry and mild Monday and Tuesday with highs in the low 70s, but a healthy round of rain and storms seems likely at mid-week on Wednesday. The GFS shows the surface low south of here with just rain, but the ECMWF has the surface low to the northwest and hints at severe thunderstorms. Just too early to know; see the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics and details.

AT THE BEACH: Cold and dry again today; tons o sun, but the high will be only in the low 60s. Tomorrow morning temperatures go back in the 30s on the coast, but a slow warm-up is likely through the weekend beginning tomorrow afternoon. Low 70s are possible near the coast by Friday and the weekend. Next chance of showers will come late Sunday, Sunday night, and possibly into Monday morning. The sea water temperature from Panama City west to Gulf Shores remains near 60 degrees.
