Early Evening in Alabama

North and Central Alabama are virtually free of showers at this hour, but there is a band of showers and thunderstorms across Central and South Mississippi and some of those have moved into SW Alabama.

The heaviest rain in Alabama was over Eastern Wilcox and Northern Monroe Counties in SW Alabama. There was also moderate to heavy rain over Choctaw County and South Marengo County. All of this was moving generally northward. We believe that most of those showers will diminish before reaching the Tuscaloosa/Birmingham area later this evening, although some could occur.

It has been pouring rain this afternoon over South Louisiana, extreme Southern Arkansas and about the south half of Mississippi. Two to three inches of rain have already fallen over NE Louisiana and SE Arkansas.

I talked to our colleague, Bill Murray. He was driving from New Orleans to Houma, Louisiana. He reported some of the heaviest rain that he has ever seen and some of the bayous were more full with water than he had seen.

QUICK NOTES FROM ELSEWHERE
That was a significant tornado outbreak in the Plains this afternoon and continuing tonight. The Storm Prediction Center has a High Risk posted overnight in Central Kansas surrounded by a Moderate Risk area that goes from NW Oklahoma to Southern Nebraska and NE to Colorado. Lots of tornado damage this afternoon near the Colorado front range, especially west of Greeley. At least one fatality and major property damage.

An intense low-pressure area was causing problems over a wide area. Between Denver and Ft. Collins this afternoon, in one community, wind equipment failed after clocking 87 mph gusts.

CAN YOU BELIEVE A SNOWSTORM?
Heavy snow from the northern and central mountains of Wyoming southward through the Colorado mountains and even to around Flagstaff, Arizona. As much as 20 inches will fall in parts of Wyoming and the higher elevations in Colorado.
