WARM DAY IN MAY: Temperatures are mostly in the 80-84 degree range at mid-afternoon across the great state of Alabama, and the radar is quiet with no echoes. Most of the action is well to the west, where much of Central Texas is under a severe thunderstorm watch. Low clouds should form across Alabama late tonight as moisture levels rise.

SHOWERS/STORMS RETURN: We will mention a chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and Saturday, but the rain won’t be continuous.

Tomorrow, looks like an MCS (mesoscale convective system) could move along the Gulf Coast during the early morning hours (what you see now over Texas), and there is a decent chance the morning should be rain-free up this way with only isolated showers. Showers are a little more likely tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night, but the morning MCS could very well block the good inflow of moist air up into North Alabama, so I think rain amounts tomorrow around here should be fairly light, and perhaps spotty.

SATURDAY: The most widespread rain will come Saturday; the high resolution NAM (4km) shows the heaviest rain along and south of I-59 during the day, with lighter amounts to the north. As we have stated all week… it won’t rain all day Saturday, but it could rain at any hour of the day or night. There will be some thunder, but we do not expect any severe weather. Expect a high in the 70s tomorrow and Saturday.

DRIER AIR BLOWS IN SUNDAY: A cold front will pass through late Saturday night, and a nice surge of cool, dry air moves into our state late in the weekend. Sunday should feature a good supply of sunshine with a fresh north breeze and a high in the low to mid 70s.

CHILLY MORNINGS NEXT WEEK: Still looks like we are headed for the 40s early Monday and Tuesday morning, well below average for mid-May, and we could be close to record territory early Tuesday. But, the air will be very dry and the days will be pleasant; the high Monday will be in the 70s, and we might even touch 80 degrees Tuesday afternoon. Looks like the next chance of showers will come toward the end of the week; see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
