Occasional Showers/Storms Through Tomorrow

RADAR CHECK: At mid-afternoon the radar is relatively quiet across North and Central Alabama. A large MCS (mesoscale convective system) moved across the Northern Gulf of Mexico, blocking the moisture inflow up into this part of the state. The sky is generally cloudy, although the sun is out in a few spots over Northwest Alabama; temperatures are mostly in the 70s.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: The high resolution NAM shows showers and storms increasing over the northern half of Alabama tonight in the 9pm-3am time frame… but the evening should remain mostly dry.

For tomorrow, we will maintain a chance of occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm… the most widespread rain should be along and south of I-20, with showers over North Alabama more scattered in nature. It won’t rain all day, and while some thunder is possible severe weather is not expected.

If you have something planned outdoors tomorrow, just be aware that some rain is possible at just about any hour of the day. Rain ends tomorrow night as a cold front moves south.

SUNDAY: Sunshine returns in full force Sunday, along with a fresh north breeze. The high will be only in the low 70s, and some communities north of Birmingham won’t make it out of the 60s.

CHILLY MORNINGS: We are still looking at lows well down in the 40s early Monday and Tuesday morning of next week… and some potential for the normally colder spots reaching the upper 30s; something that rarely happens in the middle of May in Alabama. Afternoons will be pleasant… in fact we should warm to near 80 Tuesday afternoon with s strong May sun.

Some hint a few showers could return to Alabama toward the end of next week, but the 12Z GFS is less than impressive with rain chances. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, details, and graphics.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
