Drier Air Is Moving Into Alabama

LOWER DEWPOINTS: The dewpoint has dropped to 60 degrees at the Muscle Shoals airport early this morning, a sign of drier air moving into our state from the northwest. We expect the northern half of Alabama will be rain-free today with a high in the mid 80s along with a north breeze; any showers should be confined to the southern half of the state.

Tomorrow will be dry as well with a high in the mid to upper 80s with a good supply of sunshine.

LATTER HALF OF THE WEEK: Moisture levels begin to rise Wednesday, and a few showers are possible. Then, on Thursday and Friday, we will mention scattered showers and storms on both days; the sky will be occasionally cloudy with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 80s. Remember, when we say “scattered”, that means it won’t rain everywhere, but it could rain anywhere Thursday on Friday a time or two; a strong storm is not out of the question but no organized severe weather.

OUR WEEKEND: The 00Z GFS brings in drier air Saturday and Sunday; at this point it looks like any showers around here will be few and far between. Expect a decent amount of sunshine both days with highs between 87 and 90 degrees.

TROPICAL MISCHIEF: A disturbance near the Yucatan Channel has a low chance of developing into a tropical depression over the Gulf this week as it moves northeast; one way or another the main effect will be the same… lots of rain for Central and South Florida (the peninsula). Places like Orlando, Tampa, Daytona Beach, Fort Myers, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale should see lots of rain over the next 4-5 days. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet on this third day of the 2013 hurricane season. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

AT THE BEACH: Very routine early summer weather for the Gulf this week from Panama City west to Gulf Shores; about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily with a few scattered showers or storms; the risk of any one spot getting wet will be in the 30 percent range all week and into the weekend. Highs will be in the 80s, and the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 80 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS SPECIAL TONIGHT: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will do a two hour special tonight on the situation in Oklahoma City Friday night… the tragic death of three storm chasers, safety issues… etc. Some of the guests will include Rick Smith of the Oklahoma City NWS office, Dr. Marshall Shepherd, President of the American Meteorological Society, and John Brown, our local Skywatcher who is an expert on dealing with HP (heavy precipitation) supercells. You can watch it live on our digital weather channel “James Spann 24/7”, or on the web here.
