HOTTEST SO FAR: Birmingham finally hit 90 today for the first time in 2013. We usually see our first 90 degree high in mid to late May (last year we hit 90 for the first time on May 1). To the north, Huntsville soared to 95 degrees at 3:00. The sky is partly to mostly sunny, and we have nothing on radar around here.

Tomorrow will be even hotter; both the NAM and the GFS are printing a high of 96 degrees at Birmingham.

STORMS THURSDAY: Thursday will be another hot day with mid 90s likely. But, the air aloft will be colder as the upper ridge weakens a bit, and with a surface boundary approaching, scattered showers and storms are possible by mid to late afternoon. SPC has a pretty good part of Alabama in the standard “slight risk” of severe storms; instability values will be very high, and where storms form they could pack quite a punch; hail and strong winds will be the primary threat. The chance of any one spot seeing a storm Thursday afternoon is one in three.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Heat levels will back off Friday as the high drops into the 88-91 degree range. Humidity levels will be lower as well, and Saturday morning should be very pleasant with a low down in the low to mid 60s. We are still projecting rain-free weather this weekend, with a high in the low 90s.

NEXT WEEK: Scattered showers and storms are possible Monday and Tuesday as the upper ridge weakens again and low level moisture levels rise. The high on these two days should be in the upper 80s.

TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin and tropical storm formation is not expected this week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Looking good through the weekend; about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day with only widely scattered showers or storms. Highs on the immediate coast will hold in the 80s, with low 90s inland. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the low 80s from Panama City west to Gulf Shores.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on the new episode we recorded last night.
