SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS: A classic case of summer weather in Alabama today. Temperatures are generally in the 86-90 degree range, and we have widely scattered showers and storms on radar. The showers are moving east, and some of them are producing heavy rain and lightning. All of these showers will dissipate quickly once the sun goes down later this evening.

Don’t expect much change tomorrow… widely scattered afternoon showers or storms with a mix of sun and clouds and a high around 90 degrees. Moisture will be a tad deeper Thursday, and the coverage of afternoon showers and storms should be a little higher.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: We will forecast scattered to numerous showers and storms Friday and Saturday as a weak surface front approaches from the north, and an upper trough forms over the eastern half of the U.S. The high should be in in the upper 80s on these days, and while the sun will be out at times, the amount of sunshine wil be somewhat limited.

Showers and storms should begin to thin out a bit Sunday as the air becomes a little drier.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS shows a fairly deep moisture axis over Alabama most of next week, meaning we will deal with scattered showers and storms on a daily basis. Maybe numerous storms at times, but it is way too early to even try and pin down the days with the highest coverage of rain. Highs for the week will be in the 85-90 degree range, which is below average for early July in Alabama.

TROPICS: We do note that “Cosme” has become a hurricane in the East Pacific off the Mexican coast with sustained winds of 75 mph… but it is moving to the west and will not impact any land mass. The Atlantic basin remains quiet.

GULF COAST WEATHER: No big weather changes through the weekend… about 6 to 8 hours of sun each day with the usual risk of scattered showers and storms. Highs will remain in the upper 80s along the immediate coast, with sea water temperatures in the low to mid 80s.
