Winter Weather Progress–1:30 pm Report

| January 31, 2007 @ 1:31 pm | 26 Replies

Radar shows the nearest precipitation to Alabama at 1:30 pm across Arkansas and NW Louisiana.

Everything is on schedule for precipitation to reach Alabama tonight. Here in Central Alabama, including Birmingham, it should start around 8, 9, or 10 pm in West Alabama and may be as late as midnight in the Birmingham area. Can’t rule out a period of freezing rain and/or sleet.

The NWS discontinued the Winter Weather Advisory for Tuscaloosa County. As it stands now, the advisory continues for an area from Lamar, Fayette, Walker, Jefferson, Blount, Saint Clair, Talladega, Clay, Cleburne and Randolph County northward.

Could be some icy spots in those areas late tonight into the early hours of Thursday. Does not seem to be a major icing threat but it would be a good idea (excellent idea) to get up early tomorrow morning and check on the weather.

Further north in Alabama, the NWS, Huntsville advises that up to one inch of snow and sleet could accumulate in places like Florence, Russellville and Cullman (to name a few) Over in NE Alabama as much as 1 to 2 inches could accumulate in places like Huntsville, Scottsboro, Mentone, Fort Payne and DeSoto State Park.

As temperatures rise slowly tomorrow morning, it will change over to all rain.

Early this afternoon it was a cold 18 with visibility 1/2 mile in moderate snow at Mountain Home, in North Arkansas. Light sleet was reported in Shreveport. Snow and sleet was falling over much of Oklahoma.

Our next update will probably be the afternoon video discussion from James Spann, usually posted by 2:30 or so.

This is a developing situation and there can be some last minute changes in the area affected and how much.
