SOAKED: A band of strong storms with torrential rain has been moving steadily south this afternoon; rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches have been common; radar suggests parts of Franklin County had over 4 inches up in Northwest Alabama. SPC continues a severe thunderstorm watch for the southern half of Alabama through 10:00 tonight; storms could become severe in spots as they move through the southern counties of our state.

The NWS has issued a flash flood warning for the city of Montgomery and northern Montgomery County, severe thunderstorm warnings are up for some Southwest Alabama counties.

Up this way, light to moderate rain continues behind the line of storms, but will taper off during the next hour or two.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: The disturbed northwest flow aloft continues, and we will maintain the chance of a few passing showers or thunderstorms over the next 36 hours. Like today, a few heavy downpours are possible.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Good news for those of you tired of the rain; these two days should offer a good supply of sunshine with hardly any showers as drier air moves into the state. The weather will be warmer, with a high in the 87 to 90 degree range.

OUR WEEKEND: Showers and storms are possible Saturday as a surface front approaches from the north. It won’t rain all day, and the sun should be out at times. Then, drier air should begin moving into North Alabama Sunday as the best chance of showers moves down into the southern half of the state.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS still shows dry weather for the northern half of the state Monday and Tuesday with lower humidity levels and cooler nights… then the risk of scattered showers and storms will slowly return over the latter half of the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and details.

TROPICS: NHC now shows a 60 percent chance of the tropical wave in the far East Atlantic developing into a tropical depression or storm over the next 48 hours; it will move west/northwest over the next 5 days, and should be north of the Leeward Islands late in the weekend. Most analogs to this system recurve into the open Atlantic, but we will keep an eye on it in coming days. Again see the Weather Xtreme video for maps and graphics.

AT THE BEACH: About 4 to 6 hours of sunshine tomorrow and Wednesday with scattered storms, but increasing amounts of sun are likely Thursday and Friday with fewer showers. Highs on the immediate coast hold in the mid to upper 80s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on the new episode we recorded last night.
