It has been a summer of high amplitude weather patterns across the United States. Huge ridges with record heat. Deep troughs with cold temperatures.

Right now, a very Autumn like airmass is over the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes states. In Chicago, Tom Skilling reports that it has been the coolest July weather in 29 years.

Chicago has had really warm weather alternating with really cool periods. Interestingly, the result has been an average temperature that is very close to their 30 year normals.

It was in the 50s all over Chicagoland this morning. It even dropped to 47F at Heyward IL.

A long list of record lows were establish for July 28th, including:

…40F at Aberdeen SD
…41F at Huron SD
…42F at Grand Forks ND
…44F at Sioux Falls SD
…47F at Lincoln NE
…48F at Ottumwa IA and Lincoln IL
…51F at Des Moines IA
…52F at Columbia MO
…53F at Cincinnati, Dayton (tied)
…56F at Duluth MN

Yesterday, the highs of 69F at Salina KS and 71F at Russell KS were record cool maximum readings for July 27th.

ON the flip side, it was 100F Saturday afternoon at Corpus Christi TX, a record for the date.
