OCEAN OF HUMIDITY: A blanket of very moist air continues to hang over Alabama, with precipitable water values over 2 inches. Nothing is on the radar at daybreak, but our “MCS of the morning” is over Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and that will rotate around the periphery of an upper high over Louisiana, and we expect more showers and storms around here this afternoon and tonight.

Like yesterday, the storms will drop very heavy amounts of rain in a short time, and localized flooding issues are still possible. Of course, rain distribution in summer is very uneven, and some spots won’t get that much, and the sun will be out at times. Today’s high will be in the 87 to 90 degree range.

Yesterday’s official high in Birmingham was 89 degrees… we have hit 90 on only one day so far in August (August 6 when the high was 90).

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The large scale pattern just won’t change much. Dewpoints in the 70s, intervals of sunshine, scattered to numerous showers and storms. While the most numerous storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we cannot rule out a late night or morning shower or storm in spots. Highs generally in the upper 80s.

And, no real change through much of next week. A surface front that marks the leading edge of drier air will approach the northern border of Alabama, but the GFS suggests it won’t have enough southward push to reach us. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

TROPICS: A weak tropical wave over the eastern Caribbean shows no sign of development, and the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Still looks pretty good through early next week. There will be a few scattered storms on a daily basis, but not as numerous as the ones we are seeing here thanks to high pressure aloft near the coast. About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day with highs around 90 on the immediate coast. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this morning is a warm 87 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
