RAIN-FREE LATE SUMMER AFTERNOON: Just for the fun of it, I did peek at the state radar systems this afternoon, and there is not one drop of rain in all 67 Alabama counties. The sky is partly to mostly sunny, and temperatures are mostly in the upper 80s.

Tomorrow will be rain-free, with heat levels creeping up. Most places will reach 90… some West Alabama communities will see low 90s.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Low level moisture will increase, and the air aloft will be a bit cooler. We will mention widely scattered afternoon showers or storms Friday, with afternoon storms becoming a little more numerous over the weekend. Chance of any one spot getting wet will be 10-20 percent Friday, and 30-40 percent over the weekend. Expect a mix of sun and clouds all three days with afternoon highs in the 89-93 degree range. The higher probabilities for afternoon showers will come over the eastern half of the state.

NEXT WEEK: We will maintain a chance of showers and storms Monday with the approach of a cold front, and the 12Z GFS confirms the idea of cooler, drier air moving down into Alabama Tuesday and Wednesday with temperatures 10-15 degrees below average; that could suggest highs in the upper 70s and lows well down in the 50s… maybe even a few upper 40s for cooler pockets across North Alabama by the middle of next week. See the Weather Xtreme Video for the maps, graphics, and details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For some high school teams, their first game of the season will be played tomorrow night; for those games the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature in the mid 80s. Then, Friday evening, the chance of any one stadium seeing a brief shower or storm is in the 20 percent range; otherwise mostly fair with upper 80s at kickoff, with temperatures falling through the 80s during the games, reaching the upper 70s by the final whistle.

COLLEGE GAMES: Auburn will host Washington State Saturday evening (6:00 p.m. kickoff) at Jordan-Hare Stadium; a brief shower or storm is possible during the first half… chance of a shower at the stadium is 30 percent. Otherwise, mostly fair with a kickoff temperature near 88 degrees, then dropping through the 80s during the game. The weather down at Troy will be almost identical for the UAB/Troy game; the kickoff temperature down in Pike County will be close to 90. Alabama won’t have to worry about weather since they play Virginia Tech in the Georgia Dome, but for fans headed over for the game, Saturday in Atlanta will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high around 90 degrees, and a few pop-up afternoon showers or storms are possible.

TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin for now; the wave in the Central Atlantic lost much of it’s convection earlier today.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Lots of sunshine tomorrow and Friday; a few widely scattered storms will show up by the weekend, but the sky will remain partly to mostly sunny. Highs on the immediate coast between Panama City and Gulf Shores will remain in the upper 80s, with low 90s inland. The sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 84 degrees.
