Stormy Start To Labor Day

STORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN: A batch of storms moved down into North Alabama late last night, and the storms have been working their way slowly southward overnight. A flash flood warning is up for Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, and Etowah Counties until 8:30a CT; radar suggests over two inches of rain has fallen in this part of Northeast Alabama so far.
As I write this around 6:00 the storms are moving into the Birmingham and Anniston metro areas along I-20 with very heavy rain; winds are gusting to around 35 mph on the leading edge of the storms, and there is very frequent lightning. This big batch of rain and storms will continue to move slowly to the south through the morning hours.
I get the idea the afternoon will be generally rain-free for the northern half of the state, although the chance of rain is not zero. Then, another band of showers and storms should develop tonight ahead of a surface cold front.
TOMORROW: Drier air begins to move into the Tennessee Valley region of far North Alabama, and the day should be generally sunny there. But, we will maintain the risk of a few showers and storms, generally south of U.S. 278, or south of a line from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden. By evening, the best chance of showers and storms should be south of I-20. The high tomorrow will be in the 87-90 degree range around here with a mix of sun and clouds.
LATTER HALF OF THE WEEK: A nice surge of dry, continental air arrives tomorrow night, and we should be rain-free Wednesday through Friday, with mostly sunny days, fair pleasant nights, and lower humidity levels. Highs should be in the mid to upper 80s, with early morning lows well down in the 60s. Cooler pockets should reach the 50s early Thursday morning.
OUR WEEKEND: A short wave could squeeze out a shower or two Saturday, but the air will still be pretty dry, and showers could be few and far between. Sunday looks generally dry with only isolated showers; the sky should be partly sunny both days with a high in the 86-90 degree range, about where we should be for early September in Alabama.
TROPICS: A disturbance about to move into the Caribbean has a decent chance of becoming a tropical depression, but it is fighting dry air, and it will also have to move over the mountainous island of Hispaniola, so it will have a hard time getting it’s act together. The upper trough over the eastern U.S. late in the week should turn this one north before reaching the Gulf of Mexico; almost all guidance keeps this east of the U.S. mainland if something does develop there. The rest of the Atlantic basin is pretty quiet. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show tomorrow night (not tonight) at 8:30p CT.
