FINE FALL DAY: On this first “official” day of the autumn season, the northern half of Alabama is under a sunny sky, with temperatures mostly in the 80-85 degree range.

CHANGES: A strong upper trough over the Great Plains will roll in here during the next 36 hours, and bring showers back to Alabama. Still looks like the main window for rain begins at midday tomorrow, continuing overnight tomorrow night and possibly into Wednesday morning. The latest model data suggests the big window for rain comes from about 10:00 a.m. tomorrow through 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Rain amounts of one-half to one inch are likely.

STRONG STORMS: SPC has a 5 percent severe weather probability defined over West Alabama and much of Mississippi. The upper trough will be some excellent upward motion and pretty strong wind fields, but low level moisture and instability are lacking. So, while the chance of severe weather isn’t zero, it is not expected to be a big issue. But, a strong thunderstorm is certainly a possibility.

Drier air blows into Alabama by midday Wednesday, and we should begin to see some sun breaking through by Wednesday afternoon.

THURSDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Looks dry with temperatures near average for late September in Alabama. Afternoon highs will be generally in the low to mid 80s; morning lows in the 60s. Each day should feature a good supply of sunshine, and this week no risk of rain for high school football games Thursday and Friday night, or the in state games Saturday.

A cold front will approach as the weekend ends, and a few showers could slip into Northwest Alabama Sunday evening.

NEXT WEEK: Just a few scattered showers Monday along a decaying cold front, followed by slightly cooler and drier air Tuesday and Wednesday.

TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Rain and storms are likely on the Gulf Coast tomorrow from Panama City over to Gulf Shores, but drier air takes over by Wednesday afternoon, and the weather looks good Thursday through the weekend with mostly sunny days and fair nights. Highs in the upper 70s tomorrow, then back in the 80s for the rest of the week. The sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 81 degrees.
