CHILLY AUTUMN BREEZE: We begin this day with a clear sky and temperatures around 50 degrees in most places. A cool north breeze of 10-20 mph will develop today as colder air blows into the state; the high will be around 60 despite a sunny sky. This is over 10 degrees below the average high of 72 for October 23.

COLD NIGHTS: Early morning lows will drop down into the mid to upper 30s tomorrow and Friday morning with the threat of scattered frost. The sky will stay sunny tomorrow and Friday; the high tomorrow will be in the 64-67 degree range, but Friday will be colder with a high in the mid to upper 50s as yet another surge of colder air moves in from the north.

SATURDAY MORNING FREEZE? We still project the low Saturday morning in the 27 to 34 degree range for North/Central Alabama, and for many it should bring the first freeze of the season with a clear sky and light wind.

The weekend remains rain-free with a sunny sky Saturday and Sunday; the high Saturday will be in the mid 60s, and we will be close to 70 Sunday afternoon.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear and cold weather for the high school football games tomorrow night and Friday night; temperatures will fall into the 40s during the games.

For Saturday’s Magic City Classic (Alabama State vs Alabama A&M) at Birmingham’s Legion Field (2:30p CT kickoff), the sky will be sunny with a temperature near 62 at kickoff, then falling into the 50s during the second half. Alabama hosts Tennessee at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday afternoon (2:30p CT kickoff)… 64 degrees as the game begins with 50s during the second half.

Auburn will host Florida Atlantic Saturday evening (6:00p CT kickoff) at Jordan-Hare Stadium… the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature near 58 degrees, falling into the 40s by the final whistle. UAB will play indoors Saturday; they are in the Alamodome to take on the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (4:30p CT kickoff). For fans traveling to San Antonio, the day will be mostly cloudy with a chance of widely scattered showers. The high Saturday afternoon will be in the mid to upper 70s.

NEXT WEEK: We have a pattern change next week, and a major system will bring unsettled weather to the state late in the week. The GFS and the ECMWF differ on details, but the weather looks wet and potentially stormy around Halloween, Thursday October 31. We won’t know the specifics on this until the weekend, but we can’t rule out a severe weather threat. Keep in mind our fall tornado season kicks off at the end of next week. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, details, and graphics.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Lorenzo, in the Central Atlantic, is packing sustained winds of 50 mph. It is moving east, and should dissipate in 4-5 days. No threat to land.

AT THE BEACH: Sunny days, clear nights along the Gulf Coast from Panama City over to Gulf Shores through the weekend. Highs mostly in the 70s, lows mostly in the 50s, although some 40s are possible early Saturday morning.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
