COLD AIR ARRIVES: As projected, this day has been sunny, windy, and cool across the great state of Alabama. Temperatures are mostly in the 50s with a gusty northwest wind. The wind will die down this evening, and temperatures will drop down into the mid 30s early tomorrow morning. Some of the colder pockets could see a light freeze.

Tomorrow will feature a cloudless sky with an afternoon high between 58 and 62 degrees.

OUR WEEKEND: The great fall weather continues; partly sunny days, fair nights over the weekend. The high Saturday will be in the low to mid 60s; then Sunday’s high will range from 66 to 70 degrees. Saturday morning’s low will be in the upper 30s; expect low to mid 40s early Sunday morning.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the first round of the high school football playoffs tomorrow night, the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from the low 50s at kickoff into the 40s by halftime. Great night for football, just bring a warm jacket.

Alabama hosts LSU Saturday night in Tuscaloosa (7:00p CT kickoff); the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature near 55 degrees, falling into the 40s during the second half. Auburn travels to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers (11:00 a.m. CT kickoff)… the sky will be mostly sunny with temperatures rising from 55 at kickoff to near 60 degrees by the final whistle.

UAB is on the road; they play at Marshall Saturday in Huntingdon, West Virginia; the sky will be sunny with 52 degrees at kickoff, and 57 degrees by the end of the game. Doesn’t get much better for a November Saturday.

NEXT WEEK: The big story is that the coldest air so far this season will invade the Deep South Wednesday. Ahead of the push of cold air, a little light rain or drizzle is possible Tuesday night, but it won’t amount to much with very limited moisture.

The 12Z GFS is suggesting we will drop into the upper 20s early Wednesday, with a high only in the 40s Wednesday afternoon. Thursday morning will be the coldest morning, with lows potentially in the 20-25 degree range. These values are not far from record levels for mid-November.

And, the big weather buzz is the 12Z run of the ECMWF, which puts down a blanket of snow over North Alabama Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. This is an outlier, and considering the UA pattern and climatology for November, we will discount that solution for now. See the maps and graphics on the Weather Xtreme video.

SUPER TYPHOON: This is a historic, dangerous, life threatening storm now moving into the Philippines. The storm has been called “Haiyan”, but in the Philippines it is known as “Yolanda”.

Sustained winds have reached 195 mph, with gusts to 230 mph. Almost mind boggling. The system won’t lose much strength as it moves over the islands…
