The Cold Air Settles into Alabama

| January 6, 2014 @ 1:37 am

As expected the Arctic front has made it through Alabama and has brought quite the change in weather.

Temperatures continue to fall this morning as a strong north wind and a cold air advection are ongoing across the region.

As the front moved through, the rain did switched over to sleet and snow. There were numerous reports of the white stuff via social media across the state. Just as was forecasted, some areas saw a light dusting and some area saw no accumulations at all. There will continue to be some very light snow falling over the next few hours, but for the most part we are nearly done with the wintry precip. I know wintry precip causes quite the stir in the state, but it really is the secondary story compared to the very cold temperatures that are moving into the state.

Once the front passed your location, it did not take long for those temperatures to go below freezing, and that is where they will be staying.Central Alabama is seeing a range in temps this morning as upper 20s are along the Interstate 59 corridor, south of there, a bit warmer, but 20s will overspread these locations too. As we look off to our northwest, we can really begin to see the air that is moving into the state. Low 20s in our northwestern counties and teens across northern Mississippi. Notice the single digits on the other side of Memphis.

Now as we head through the overnight hours and into the morning hours, there is some concern that there will be some slick spots. As temps are below freezing and there is quite a bit of standing water on the roads around the state. Make sure you use caution if you are driving around. Any area you see water is likely to be frozen, and there is also the threat of black ice.

The winds are sustained in the 15-25 mph range and that is driving our wind chill values down into the teens currently and as out temps continue to drop, those wind chill values will drop into the single digits as well as below zero. Make sure you bundle up if you have to head out this morning.
