SUB-ZERO COLD EARLIER TODAY: After a long review of low temperature reports from our team of Skywatchers and the National Weather Service, the coldest in the state this morning was -3 (F)… observed at a coop station near Harvest, in Madison County (near Huntsville). An observation of -2 (F) was reported near Madison.

Here are the “official” lows… all records for January 7…

Huntsville 4 (5 in 1912)
Birmingham 7 (11 in 1970)
Anniston 8 (11 in 1970)
Tuscaloosa 10 (13 in 1970)
Montgomery 14 (15 in 1970)
Mobile 14 (18 in 1970)

COLD AGAIN TONIGHT/NOT AS COLD TOMORROW: We will drop down into the 10 to 18 degree range early tomorrow morning, but finally, about about 60 consecutive hours, we will climb above freezing by late morning, and the high tomorrow will be around 40 degrees with a good supply of sunshine.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: We warm into the lows 50s Thursday, and mid 50s Friday, with a mix of sun and clouds both days. Some freezing rain could break out Thursday morning west of Alabama, around Memphis and the Mississippi Delta, but that shouldn’t bother us.

WET WEEKEND: The new GFS continues to look pretty wet for the weekend. The upper trough west of the state will come through in two parts; the first part brings rain Saturday, and the second segment means a wet Sunday. There should be a break in the rain late Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. Rain amounts of 1-2 inches are likely, and some folks, especially over South Alabama, might even hear a little thunder since there will be some surface based instability. The high Saturday will be in the 60s, and Sunday’s high will be in the 50s.

NEXT WEEK: For now Monday and Tuesday look dry, with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s, which is where we should be this time of the year.

VOODOO LAND: The GFS continues to show another cold shot around January 17-20, followed by moderating temperatures over the last 10 days of the month. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
