An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

COLD JANUARY DAY: Despite a mostly sunny sky over the northern half of Alabama, temperatures remain below freezing in many places. Birmingham is just above freezing at 3:00 with 33 degrees… to the north temperatures are mostly in the upper 20s over the Tennessee Valley. The air is very dry; Birmingham’s dewpoint has dropped to -7 (F) at mid-afternoon.

TO THE SOUTH: Clouds have persisted along the Gulf Coast today, and some sleet has been reported from New Orleans through Mobile and over to Pensacola and Panama City. Even reports of snow flurries near the Gulf Coast today, something you don’t see too often. Mobile reports a sub-freezing 31 degrees at mid-afternoon.

WEEKEND WARM-UP: The weekend will feature a good supply of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday; we will reach the upper 40s tomorrow afternoon, followed by low 50s Sunday. Enjoy the “warmth”, because it won’t last long…

BACK INTO THE DEEP FREEZE NEXT WEEK: Monday’s high will be in the mid to upper 40s, but temperatures will begin to fall by mid to late afternoon with an increasing north wind. The high will drop down into the low 30s Tuesday and Wednesday, with a hard freeze early Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning. Lows should be well down in the teens, and some spots could reach the single digits at daybreak Wednesday, much like this morning.

There might be a few snow flurries at some point during the cold wave next week, but the air will be very dry and they won’t amount to much.

LATE NEXT WEEK: Snow lovers will be disappointed that the GFS has totally lost the system at the end of the week; it hints at a sunny day with a warmer afternoon. The ECMWF shows a weak impulse with potential for a few sprinkles, but nothing more. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

THIS MORNING: Birmingham’s official low was 11 degrees… coldest place I would find was Valley Head with 3 degrees; Vic Bell up at Black Creek had a low of 3.5 degrees (just northeast of Gadsden).

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
