Our weekend double header of Spring-like weather will continue today with clouds and rain across South Alabama while a mixture of sun and clouds occur across North and Central Alabama with highs climbing toward the 70-degree mark. All-in-all a fine Sunday for Central Alabama. But the weather pattern continues to be active.

The wave in the Gulf moves eastward taking the precipitation with it as a front makes its way through the Southeast US in response to the slow sharpening of the long wave trough position over the eastern portion of the US. A series of disturbances moving through the long wave trough will gradually sharpen the trough Monday and Tuesday. Another cold front will make its way through the Southeast US on Tuesday afternoon bringing rain chances to the area and dropping temperatures substantially as a surface high settles into North Texas. Wednesday is shaping up to be another one of those raw kind of days with temperatures changing little with daytime temperatures holding in the upper 30s and 40s for Central Alabama. The cold air will be made to feel even worse with a strong north to northwest wind at 15 to 25 mph. It is possible that we could see a few snow flurries with the arrival of the cold air late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning, but there is every indication that the cold air will not arrive until the moisture has departed. Look for a hard freeze on Thursday morning with lows plummeting well into the lower 20s and some spots dipping into the teens.

The surface high will migrate east on Thursday while the upper long wave trough fills a little. But a fast moving short wave coming out of the western US promises to develop a surface low over Central Texas on Friday opening us to Gulf moisture and the likelihood of some rain on Friday and into Saturday. The rain occurrence should not be a long event with that short wave moving off the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Saturday afternoon. A brief day or two of good weather should come our way as we come under the influence of an upper ridge Sunday and early Monday.

But as we edge into voodoo country, another potent short wave was coming out of the Southwest US promising yet another wet period. The GFS also showed another strong impulse moving out of Canada that could bring another round of winter weather to much of the eastern US. This is similar to the projections on the GFS yesterday, so we are showing some consistency to this notion. But remember it is still way out in voodoo country and Week 2, so may change in future model runs. It will bear watching.
