Long Streak May End This Week
Everybody is always watching for the longest winning streak or longest losing streak in various sports, and while weather is not a sport, it’s always interesting to see when some sort of weather streak is underway. Things like days since the last rain or days since the last tornado or number of days with highs below freezing. Well, since the last several months across Central Alabama has been somewhat cold, an interesting statistic that most people probably have not thought about is the number of consecutive days without hitting the 80-degree mark in Central Alabama.
Our friends at the National Weather Service consulted the long term climatological records for Birmingham and Anniston and compiled this list of the longest period of time with temperatures below 80 degrees. This is particularly interesting since we expect to see a strong upper ridge develop over the area during the first part of the week ahead which quite possibly could push high temperatures in Central Alabama into the lower 80s.
Here is the list of the ten longest streaks with consecutive days below 80 degrees for Birmingham and Anniston. The data for 2014 goes through yesterday, so assuming that we don’t hit 80 until Tuesday or Wednesday, these rankings would stand as is. Should we stay below 80 on Tuesday or Wednesday, we could see the 2014 streak extended.

Even though it has been cold, it’s hard to believe that we are not really that far away from the time we will begin to grumble about the heat and humidity.
