The weekend is shaping up to be a fabulous one, and certainly a great day for some racing at Barber Motorsports Park. If you plan to be outside for anything today, be sure to have sunscreen available. We should see close to full sun with just a few wispy cirrus clouds as highs climb into the lower 80s.

Sunday becomes a bit of a transition day leading into what is likely to be multiple rounds of severe weather from early Monday into Wednesday. The ridge will begin to migrate further east on Sunday allowing for a quick turn around from dry conditions as moisture increases out of the south. While not likely to affect much of us, we could see some isolated showers and thunderstorms late Sunday afternoon and into Sunday evening, however, the main action will be back to the west. A very deep trough situated just east of the Rockies will be digging into the South Central US where it will sit for a couple of days as a number of short waves migrate around the closed low centered over the Central Plains. This will set the Lower Mississippi River Valley for multiple rounds of severe weather beginning Sunday afternoon and continuing until Wednesday.

Our greatest risk will come in several waves beginning Monday morning with another wave by afternoon and evening and still another wave possible as we get into Tuesday. The third wave will be somewhat dependent on what happens with the second wave. Watch the video for details on the instability as well as the shear, both of which appear to be fairly significant, so we may be looking a a significant severe weather outbreak for the Lower Mississippi River Valley.

Reminder here that the NOAA Weather Radio transmitter serving the Birmingham area is limping due to equipment failure which has been patched by some temporary repairs. Be sure to check your reception of the weather radio broadcast and have alternative ways of getting weather warnings.

The big trough finally inches by Wednesday and Thursday ushering in some much cooler air as lows drop back into the 40s and highs drop back into the 70s.

And with what we have going for the first half of the week, I have not even looked at voodoo country.

I’m providing support to the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, so the next Weather Xtreme Video will be posted a little later than usual on Sunday morning since I have to be at Barber Motorsports Park first thing in the morning. Enjoy this great day and Godspeed.
