Alabama 811 | Know What's Below.

Costliest Tornadoes

| May 2, 2014 @ 2:30 pm

The Storm Prediction Center’s web site has a wealth of information about severe weather in the United States. Looking through some of the information, I ran across the table below, and I thought it would be interesting to Alabama residents. Two of the top ten costliest tornadoes since 1950 occurred in Alabama, both of them on April 27, 2011. This certainly underscores the magnitude of the tornado event on that day and why we refer to it as a generational event.

The tornado count for Alabama for Monday night and early Tuesday stands at 21, 15 in Central Alabama and 6 in the Tennessee Valley counties. I have not seen a count for the counties served by the Mobile or Tallahassee NWS offices yet. But unlike April 27, 2011, most of these tornadoes have been rated EF2 or less with only a handful of EF3 tornadoes.
