Could you ask for any better weather for the weekend? Yesterday’s highs reached the upper 70s for most spots with a handful of places edging into the lower 80s. The upper ridge will be building into the eastern half of the country today and for the next several days, so look for lots of sunshine and afternoon highs climbing well into the 80s for the next week or so.

The upper level flow will be characterized by a strong upper ridge until late Friday or Saturday. While the upper ridge holds off the trough over the Rockies for several days, the trough will finally push into and through the ridge on Saturday allowing a weak frontal boundary to finally make it into the Southeast US. This looks like a showery situation, so I do not expect to see any kind of all large rain event, but there will be showers Saturday which could dampen some activities.

Greatest rainfall should stay off to our west and northwest with rainfall amounts of a half inch or so possible late Friday into Saturday. SPC notes a large area for a severe weather risk from North Central Texas into Iowa on Day 5, Thursday into early Friday. Still some uncertainties with this as the strongest energy with this system is held well to our northwest with the very strong ridge over the eastern portion of the US.

Along with the highs in the 80s, I expect to see morning lows come up a bit with most mornings seeing lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

Looking into voodoo country, the GFS is signaling a pattern change from the ridge of this week to a large trough over the eastern half of the country. With temperatures for the week ahead running about 4 to 8 degrees above normal, the pattern shift could result in temperatures dipping back to slightly below seasonal averages for the middle of May.
