RADAR CHECK: The leading edge of a large rain mass over Mississippi is getting closer to the Alabama border early this morning, and our long dry spell will be coming to an end today.

THE DAY AHEAD: Data from the high resolution NAM model hints the main window for rain and storms across North/Central Alabama will come from about 10:00 this morning through 8:00 tonight. It won’t rain all 10 hours, and there could clearly be some rain past 8:00, especially over East Alabama. The good news is that we don’t expect any severe weather issues, and rain amounts of up to one inch are possible.

We won’t get out of the 70s today due to the clouds and rain.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: While moist air hangs over the state, the dynamic support for rain fades. We will mention the chance of scattered showers and storms tomorrow, but it certainly won’t be a “wash-out”, and the sun should peek out at times with a high in the low 80s. Then, Sunday looks generally dry with only a slight risk of a shower; the high Sunday will be in the mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Not much change Monday; partly sunny and warm with only a small risk of any one spot seeing a shower. Then, a band of showers and storms will pass through the state ahead of a cold front late Tuesday or Tuesday night (doesn’t look like a severe weather threat at this point), followed by cooler and drier air Wednesday through Friday. Looks like we have a good chance of reaching the 40s by Thursday morning… not many more like that before the summer gets here.

See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: A flash flood watch is in effect for the Alabama Gulf Coast, and the western tip of the Florida Panhandle through Sunday morning. Expect occasional showers and storms through through tomorrow from Gulf Shores east to Panama City, and the rain could be heavy at times. Then, on Sunday, showers become more widely spaced, and there should be some good intervals of sunshine. For the first half of next week, expect about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine each day with widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 70s, with low 80s inland. The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 75 degrees.
