Showers on the Decrease

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below and on iTunes.

As projected, the upper disturbance and surface trough brought numerous showers to Central Alabama yesterday but if you were south of about Clanton, you just did not get much. In fact, there were a number of spots that got completely missed yesterday – just the nature of showers. And we had a couple of severe thunderstorm warnings along with several reports involving trees and power lines downed.

Looks like we’re going to see a decrease in showers today and Saturday. Most of the showers should occur from about Birmingham southward with the drying of the upper atmosphere. The drying was noted on the upper air balloon run yesterday evening on the BMX sounding. And perhaps the fact that a fairly large area got some rain will provide us with a bit of soil moisture to keep the heat in check come the first of next week. At least we can hope.

The upper disturbance moves into the Gulf and a small disturbance breaks off and heads west along the Gulf Coast for the next several days. That will produce some good rains across the Gulf Coast region over the next few days on the order of 2 to 3 inches.

But for Central Alabama, we dry out. I think we’ll be mostly dry for much of the upcoming week after tomorrow but isolated storms in the heat of the day remain a possibility.

Longer range GFS forecasts suggest that the trough over the eastern portion of the country will stay more or less in place. That should keep any excessive heat at bay for us, but generally keeps us in a pattern of the possibility of daily showers.

Tropics are quiet still as we enter August and begin to get into the heart of hurricane season.

Thanks for tuning in. I hope that you have a great Friday. I’m headed out shortly for a little car maintenance and some errands. I expect to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted by 8 am or so on Saturday morning. God bless.
