Big Storms in the Tennessee Valley

| August 2, 2008 @ 2:07 pm | Reply

Big storms are firing over the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama this afternoon. They are lined up from Lauderdale County through Lawrence and Limestone Counties into NE Madison County. They are pushing southeast at 20 mph.

They are deveoping ahead of a weak surface boundary over Tennessee. They are building despite a strong cap. The intense surface heating has been sufficient to break the cap.

Another place the cap broke was near Gadsden. An isolated storm developed near Gadsden. It peaked near the Airport as it moved SSE and has already started to rain itself out as it moves across the Coosa River.

An additional storm was forming over Marion County northeast of Hamitlon. It is pushing SSE also.

Any storms that do form today will have the potential to produce downburst winds. In some cases, they could become severe, but they should be short lived. All storms will produce deadly lightning and torrential rains.

Go inside if one of these storms approaches.
