Some Evening Showers and Storms

| October 2, 2014 @ 5:40 pm

We continue to see a warm and moist air mass stream north our of the Gulf of Mexico. Showers and storms have developed over portions of Alabama, with a few stronger storms in Mississippi. A few of the storms in Mississippi are severe, with the threat of damaging winds and hail. Over the next few hours, we will continue to see these pre-frontal showers and storms lift towards the northeast. Some of the stronger storms could make their way into northwest Alabama this evening.

The SPC maintains much of the Mississippi Valley and areas as far east North Alabama in their standard “slight risk” for severe weather the rest of tonight, until 7 AM Friday morning. This risk is in effect as a strong line of storms currently over Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri, will be moving east through the overnight hours. The risk area covers portions of Alabama roughly along and north of Interstate 59. Within this line of storms, damaging wind gusts, and hail are the greatest concerns.

For Alabama the next several hours, we will continue to see showers and storms, that will be producing heavy rain, frequent lightning, some hail and gusty winds. It will be well into the morning hours before the line of storms to the west, will be approaching the state and it should be after 3AM before the line reaches portions of West Alabama. The line of storms will move rapidly through the state during the morning and early afternoon hours, and by this time tomorrow evening, we should see clearing conditions with much cooler weather settling into the state.
