Severe Weather Tomorrow?

It looks like a cold front will move through Alabama sometime Thursday night, and it will have some decent upper-level support, with Alabama in the divergent part of a jet by late Thursday, enhancing lift in the atmosphere.

It will get hot again tomorrow, with highs in the 90s, and dewpoints near 70. With temperatures cooling a little at mid-levels, there should be no cap, and CAPE values by afternoon could reach 3,000 J/kg.

So, with those things coming together and plenty of moisture, I’d expect some strong storms to develop over north Alabama Thursday, and move into central Alabama Thursday afternoon and evening. Large hail and damaging winds will be possible. The main threat for strong storms in BHM would probably be 3 pm through 11 pm.

We’ll be looking at this more as it gets closer. This system produced widespread severe weather on Monday and Tuesday in the Midwest, with severe storms moving through Chicago Monday night during a Cubs game. A wind gust of 94 mph was recorded at a buoy on lake Michigan 4 miles NE of Chicago. Links to a few youtube videos of the storm at Wrigley Field:
