Warm, Humid, Scattered Storms

| June 10, 2015 @ 3:33 pm

A FEW SCATTERED STORMS: A very typical June afternoon across Alabama… the weather is warm and humid with a mix of sun and clouds, and we have a pattern of random, widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. They show up very nicely on visible satellite imagery…

Showers and storms will fade away later this evening after the sun goes down.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Not much change; we project a high each afternoon in the mid to upper 80s, and once again we will have the chance of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. The chance of any one spot getting wet both days is about one in three, and the best chance of a passing shower will come from about 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., although we can’t totally rule out a late night or morning shower.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: An upper ridge will begin to build over Alabama, with 500 millibar heights increasing to 5880 meters. This means a trend toward hotter and drier weather; the high both days will be close to 90, and afternoon showers and storms become fewer in number.

NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge will set the stage for the hottest week so far this year, with potential for mid 90s across much of Alabama. Afternoon showers and storms will remain pretty isolated in nature, although they might increase a bit toward the end of the week as the ridge weakens a bit. Welcome to summer in Alabama. AT THE BEACH: We project about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through the weekend with the daily risk of scattered thunderstorms. The high on the immediate coast will be in the mid 80s, with 87 to 90 degrees inland. The sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 82 degrees.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.
