RADAR CHECK: We have a few showers and thunderstorms across North and Central Alabama this afternoon, but they are widely scattered.

Showers are moving southeast, and will dissipate after dark. Birmingham’s high so far today (as of 3:00) is 88… very possible today will be the second day in a row with a high below 90.

BRING ON THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge, centered west of Alabama, will strengthen and expand eastward, so we are still expecting hotter afternoons, and fewer showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and Sunday. Chance of any one spot seeing a storm both days is about one in five, and most of them will come during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs will be generally in the mid 90s.

NEXT WEEK: Not much change Monday and Tuesday, partly sunny both days with a high in the mid 90s, and only widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Then, later in the week showers and storms will increase as the upper ridge weakens again. Looks like highs could very well drop into the 80s by Friday July 31 with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine tomorrow through early next week along the stretch from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores, with an occasional passing thunderstorm. Highs on the coast in the upper 80s, with mid 90s inland. Sea water temperatures are in the mid 80s. See the complete Gulf Coast 7 Day Planner here. The Gulf Coast Beach Forecast is presented by Gulf Shores Plantation by Mandoki Hospitality Vacation Rentals. Escape to Gulf Shores Plantation where memories last a lifetime.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet; we do note unsettled weather over the Florida Peninsula due to a broad surface low… if something happens to develop there in coming days it will move northeast and not impact Alabama.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
