More Cold Air This Weekend

| February 11, 2016 @ 5:22 am

SHORT TERM WARM-UP: Temperatures are mostly in the 20s across Alabama early this morning, but we warm up nicely today; most communities will reach the mid 50s this afternoon with a partly sunny sky. Tomorrow, we will forecast a high between 57 and 60 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Another surge of very cold air blows in here tomorrow night, and Saturday will be mostly sunny but cold, with a high close to 40 degrees. Areas north of Birmingham won’t get out of the 30s, and we drop down to near 20 degrees by daybreak Sunday. The air stays dry Sunday, and we expect a high between 47 and 50 degrees.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clouds move in quickly, and some light precipitation will begin over the northern counties around midnight. This could begin as a light mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow over far North Alabama, but it looks like temperatures at the surface will be generally above freezing when this happens. The main risk of icy travel will come over far Northeast Alabama, especially counties like Jackson, DeKalb, and Cherokee, where temperatures could get down to near 30 by daybreak Monday.

MONDAY: Other than far Northeast Alabama, it just looks like a rain event Monday. Rain totals could approach one inch by Monday night, and the high will be in the 40s with clouds and rain. We should mention the potential for freezing rain and icy travel Monday morning will be higher east of Alabama, where cold air damming will keep temperatures lower. Our friends in Atlanta and Athens (Georgia) will need to be aware of the potential for winter weather woes Monday morning.

REST OF NEXT WEEK: A nice warm-up begins Tuesday with a partly sunny sky and a high in the 50s. Then, we reach the 60s Wednesday through Friday with dry conditions continuing. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
