Temps Going the Wrong Way

| February 24, 2016 @ 9:29 am

As James noted in the Weather Xtreme Video, today is going to be one of those raw, blustery kind of days with a stiff westerly wind that will gradually become more northwesterly this afternoon and tonight. So here’s the latest temperature trace from my weather station in Helena.

OutsideTempHistory-4

As you can see from this, the temperature has been gradually trending downward since 3 pm yesterday afternoon. There was a sharp drop in temperature between 3 and 4 am today. And since 6 am, just a little before sunrise, the temperature has continued to go down when it should be going up – definitely the wrong way! When you factor in that stiff westerly wind, it feels more like the upper 30s. So dress warmly when you head out today.

With the typical diurnal pattern to our temperature, the low typically comes around sunrise with the high in the middle of the afternoon. But today everything is going to be out of whack. At my location, the high for the day occurred at 12:01 am at 63, and we won’t know the low for the day until we reach 11:59 pm.
