WET AT TIMES: We expect periods of rain across Alabama through tonight with a cloudy sky… a few thunderstorms are possible as well. SPC maintains a low end “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe storms for parts of West Alabama this afternoon. A warm front will be in the area and a few storms could produce gusty winds near the boundary.
RADAR CHECK: Rain is fairly widespread over the northern half of Alabama this afternoon with temperatures in the 57-65 degree range… South Alabama is drier and warmer with only isolated showers. To the west, a significant severe weather event is likely across the ArkLaTex region this evening and tonight thanks to a very dynamic weather system over Texas, and those storms will push into Alabama tomorrow morning.
RADAR CHECK: There are a spotty showers across Central Alabama this afternoon… otherwise we have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures mostly in the 70s. Showers tonight will likely remain few and far between; the sky will be mostly cloudy with a low in the 55-65 degree range.

Temperatures are generally in the 67-72 degree range; the average high for Birmingham on January 17 is 54. The sky will be mostly cloudy across the state tonight with lows mostly in the 50s.

Dense fog is a problem again this morning over the southern third of of the state, where a dense fog advisory is in effect. Scattered showers will form today as moist air surges northward; a thunderstorm is possible in spots this afternoon.

Showers are in progress early this morning over the northern half of the state, and we expect periods of rain statewide over the next 24 hours. A few thunderstorms will be involved as well; SPC has now defined a “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe thunderstorms for the northwest corner of the state around the Shoals… and a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) as far south as Grove Hill, Montgomery, and Roanoke.

Look for occasional showers through tonight along with some thunder; some spots will see heavy rain. Temperatures are mostly in the 77-81 degree range at mid-afternoon.
SOME RAIN AT TIMES: A broad surface and upper low is over Southeast Louisiana this morning, and this will pull deeper moisture into Alabama today, setting the stage for periods of rain this afternoon and tonight. Understand this won’t be a continuous rain, but if you are planning or attending an outdoor event, be ready for occasional showers.
