SUNNY WINTER AFTERNOON: Nothing but sunshine around here this afternoon; temperatures are mostly in the 40s over the northern counties of the state, with 50s to the south. Interesting to note how well the snow cover shows up on visible satellite imagery this afternoon over the northwest corner of Alabama.
MARVELOUS MONDAY: Most of Alabama is enjoying a good supply of sunshine this afternoon with temperatures in the 50s over the northern counties, with 60s to the south. Tonight will be mostly fair with a low in the 40s… clouds could thicken toward daybreak.
WARMING TREND AHEAD: After a sub-freezing start, look for a nice warm-up across Alabama today. With a partly to mostly sunny sky, we project a high around 60 degrees this afternoon. Then, tomorrow, the high will be in the 65-70 degree range with a mix of sun and clouds. Moisture levels rise Wednesday… the sky will be mostly cloudy with potential for a few scattered showers during the day.
FREEZING FOG AGAIN: Again this morning “freezing fog” has formed over parts of North/Central Alabama… this is simply fog that forms with surface temperatures below freezing. It can lead to rime ice collecting on exposed surfaces, and can lead to slick spots on bridges and overpasses. A freezing fog advisory is in effect for areas along and north of I-59; temperatures will be above freezing by 8:30-9:00.
BIG WARM-UP: Some places across North Alabama have climbed 40 degrees today from the morning low to the high this afternoon. The sky is clear, and temperatures are mostly in the low to mid 60s. Tonight will be clear and not as cold as recent nights; lows will range from 34-44 degrees early tomorrow morning.
NICE WARM-UP: Temperatures are in the 25-35 degree range over most of North/Central Alabama this morning, but with a strong December sun we expect a high pretty close to 60 degrees this afternoon. We stay dry through Friday with a warming trend; we reach the mid 60s tomorrow, and highs Friday will be in the 67-70 degree range. Clouds will increase Friday night.
RAPIDLY DEVELOPING DELTA: Eyes are on extremely dangerous category four Hurricane Delta in the Caribbean, but today the weather remains quiet across Alabama. The sky is sunny over the northern half of the state; high cirrus clouds are over South Alabama. Temperatures, as expected, are warmer with low 80s in most locations. Tomorrow will be another warm, dry day with highs in the mid 80s along with a partly to mostly sunny sky.
EYES ON THE TROPICS: Alabama’s weather will remain dry through tomorrow with a warming trend; with a good supply go sunshine we rise into the low 80s today, and mid 80s tomorrow. But, of course, our attention is focused on Hurricane Delta, which will play a big role in our weather in 4-5 days.
RADAR CHECK: We have a batch of rain and thunderstorms over Northwest Alabama early this morning, but a decent part of this day should be dry across the state with only widely scattered showers or storms this afternoon. The sky will be partly sunny, and the high will be in the upper 80s for most communities. Not much change tomorrow; the main impact from Laura (in terms of wind and rain) will remain well to the west; we will have a mix of sun and clouds with a few widely scattered showers or thunderstorms by mid to late afternoon.
RADAR CHECK: Rain has been fairly widespread over the northern half of the state today; a flash flood warning was required for a while for Sumter County in West Alabama. With a cloudy sky, temperatures are mostly in the 70s over the northern and central counties. But, South Alabama is seeing a pretty good supply of sunshine with temperatures in the 85-90 degree range. The rain today is partly in associated with the remnants of former Tropical Storm Marco, although the core circulation is far to the west off the Louisiana coast. Rain tapers off tonight.
RADAR CHECK: It is a fairly quiet afternoon across Alabama; temperatures are in the 77-83 degree range at mid-afternoon with very few showers on radar. Isolated showers will remain possible through early tonight.
WARMING TREND: After four consecutive days with below-average temperatures across the northern half of Alabama, a warming trend begins today as the upper low to the north begins to weaken and lift out. We expect a high in the low 80s today; the average high for Birmingham on May 21 is 83. The sky will be partly sunny, and a few isolated showers are possible this afternoon.
RADAR CHECK: Not much on radar across Alabama this afternoon; just a few sprinkles over the northeast corner of the state. THIS AFTERNOON: While we have clouds over far North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley, most of Alabama is enjoying a sunny, pleasant May day with temperatures in the 70s. Readings are in the 60s over the northern quarter of the state due to the clouds there. The sky will be mostly fair tonight with a low in the 50s.
