Tropical Storm Dexter is not expected to strengthen significantly and is likely to fade away over the next few days. Two new systems in the Atlantic could bring new tropical activity by the weekend
Widespread rain continues to our east across portions of East and Southeast Alabama and through out Georgia as the “wedge” holds on a little longer. For the rest of Alabama, we are seeing more clouds than sunshine, with afternoon highs in the low to mid 80s.

RADAR CHECK: Light rain is falling early this morning over parts of Mobile and Baldwin counties, and a few spots over the eastern part of the state. Generally cloudy conditions will continue across Alabama today with scattered showers, most numerous over the eastern and southern counties.
The storm is currently located about 275 miles north-northwest of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds holding steady at 45 miles per hour.
RADAR CHECK: Most of the meaningful showers are across the southeast corner of Alabama this afternoon… the rest of the state is dry with a generally cloudy sky. Temperatures are remarkably comfortable for August, with most places in the 70s at mid-afternoon. A few new record low maximum temperatures are likely.
A tale of two states as the “wedge” or cold air damming from the east continues to be the dominant feature impacting the weather in Alabama. Generally east of Interstate 65, temperatures are well-below average with widespread 60s and 70s, more clouds, and widespread showers and storms.
Dexter is facing an increasingly hostile environment with westerly vertical wind shear increasing above 30 knots.

TEMPS BELOW AVERAGE: For most of Alabama temperatures will remain well below average today, the “coolest” air will be over the eastern and northern counties where highs will be in the mid to upper 70s. The record low maximum temperature for Birmingham today (August 4) is 78, set in 1966… there is a decent chance we break that record.
The National Hurricane Center has issued its first advisory for Tropical Storm Dexter, which has formed over the western Atlantic.
Clouds, rain, and the easterly wedge allowed for significant rainfall and cool temperatures over eastern Alabama today.
One person was killed in overnight flooding in East Alabama and the flash flood threat continues today with the presence of a frontal boundary and very moist air.
