Thursday brought another day of hot and humid conditions across Alabama, however, a record-tying low temperature. The most notable weather event was in Huntsville, where the daily high minimum temperature record was tied. The low temperature for the day was 75 degrees Fahrenheit, which ties the previous record for July 31st set in 2010.
There is plenty to see and do throughout the weekend, especially since the temperatures will be a little cooler. Check it out in this week’s Can’t Miss Alabama.
HEAT LEVELS COMING DOWN: While most communities will reach the low 90s today, a decent part of Alabama will stay under 90 degrees tomorrow. By Sunday and Monday highs drop into the 78-84 degree range, well below average for early August. And, as heat levels drop, coverage of scattered showers and storms will gradually rise.
RADAR CHECK: Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue to develop across the northern half of Alabama this afternoon, otherwise we have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures generally in the low 90s away from storms. Scattered storms will likely for over South Alabama over the next few hours; all of them statewide will fade late tonight.
Alabama continues to deal with hot temperatures; highs in the low to mid 90s and high humidity. Heat index values are in the danger range which is why most of the state continue with under a heat advisory again.
The Black Belt Community Foundation has announced that founding CEO and President Felecia Lucky plans to step down from her role, effective Sept. 30.
SUN AND STORMS: Alabama’s weather won’t change much today and tomorrow; highs in the 91-95 degree range for most places with afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms in scattered spots. Most of the storms will come from noon to midnight, and where they form the stronger ones will produce heavy rain, gusty winds, and gobs of lightning.
RADAR CHECK: Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue to develop across Alabama this afternoon… they are most numerous over the southern third of the state. Stronger storms are producing heavy rain, gusty winds, and lots of lightning. Away from the showers and storms, temperatures are in the low to mid 90s with a partly sunny sky.
El Barrio and Paramount, two of Birmingham’s most successful downtown restaurants, are showing the strength of their respective offerings with second locations bookending each other in a new development in West Homewood.
At least for today and tomorrow, we continue to see heat index values over 105° and therefore heat advisories remain in effect across Alabama.
STILL HOT TODAY: Most Alabama communities will see a high in the mid 90s today with a partly sunny sky and the usual risk of a passing shower or storm in scattered spots from about 1:00 until 10:00 p.m. The chance of any one spot seeing rain today is 30/40 percent.
The storm just south of I-85 in Macon County has weakened but still has very heavy rain.
At 5:26 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Marion, moving south at 15 miles per hour. This storm is capable of producing wind gusts between 50 and 55 miles per hour, which may knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.
Strong storms are over northeastern Alabama this afternoon. The strongest is east of Gadsden.
