Summertime Blues

RADAR CHECK: Scattered, strong storms are moving slowly southward across Alabama this afternoon producing heavy rain, gusty winds, and lots of lightning…

On the positive side, the storms break the heat temporarily for some communities. But, away from the storms, temperatures are mostly in the mid 90s. Birmingham was reporting 97 degrees at 3:00, with a dewpoint at 71 for “heat index” of 104. The NWS did issue a “heat advisory” for parts of Alabama for the afternoon.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: The weather won’t change much. Hot humid days, highs 93-96, and the daily round of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. No way of knowing exactly when and where they will pop up in advance; best chance of them will come from about 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Very typical for late July in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: No real change. Highs 92-95; hot humid days, and again the risk of scattered thunderstorms during the peak of the daytime heating process each day. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days, fair nights, and the occasional passing thunderstorm through next week for the coast from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach. Highs on the immediate coast 87-90, with mid 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: A very calm pattern continues, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend across the Atlantic basin.
