A Mild December Day

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

Once the fog burns off this morning, the sun should pop out, and should push temperatures well up into the 60s today. Some West Alabama communities might even flirt with the 70 degree mark. No rain today as Alabama is in-between waves.

THE WEEKEND: The 06Z GFS (the latest available run) still seems to suggest our best chance of rain over the weekend will be from around midnight tomorrow night through noon Sunday. I think most of the day tomorrow will be dry with some decent intervals of sunshine, which bodes well for the Papajohns.com Bowl tomorrow afternoon at Legion Field. Once again, the high will be in the 60s.

Unfortunately, the models continue to trend toward lower rain totals over the weekend. The NAM is printing 0.33″ for Birmingham, while the GFS shows 0.42″. The rain will end from west to east during the midday hours on Sunday as cooler air moves back into the state.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: This is one of those rare times when I have to disagree with Tim Coleman; I would suggest our chance of a white Christmas is closer to 1 percent (he has it pegged at 10 percent). The 06Z GFS continues the idea of dry and cool weather on Monday, and now is coming in bone dry on Christmas Day as well, with temperatures close to normal for late December (highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s). This run really holds off the rain until Wednesday night and Thursday of next week… for now I have the best chance of rain in our public forecast on Wednesday; I will adjust that if the 12Z run comes in with the rain mainly on Thursday.

THE LAND OF VOODOO: If we are having a hard time resolving details of the wave train next week, there certainly isn’t much hope of nailing a specific solution into January. But, the weather still looks active and changeable. And, we can’t ignore the amazing cold that is building up over Alaska (temperatures there have been lower than 50 below zero the past two mornings at some stations). Lets keep an eye on that airmass.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We plan on recording show number 100 Sunday afternoon… it will be available Sunday night.

WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page. This is a great way to find the latest weather-related news stories.

Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 this afternoon… and a reminder we will go into a holiday schedule next week with just one video per day, produced by the legendary Brian Peters.
