THIS AFTERNOON: It is a cloudy and cool day for Alabama, with a few spots of light rain or drizzle over the eastern half of the state. Temperatures are pretty tightly clustered between 48 and 52 degrees.

TOMORROW/WEDNESDAY: Clouds will linger through tomorrow morning, but the sun should break through by midday as the wave moves to the east. And, the weather turns warmer with a high in the low 60s. Wednesday will be mild with a high not too far from 70 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds. Keep in mind the average high for mid-December in Alabama is around 57 degrees.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The big storm producing heavy snow across the mountains of Arizona will weaken and move well north of Alabama, but it will have a trailing cold front that will bring our next chance of showers Thursday night into Friday. With weakening upper support, rain amounts most likely will be one-half inch or less for most of our state. Temperatures stay pretty mild, with afternoon highs well up in the 60s on both days.

OUR WEEKEND: I guess we should consider a small risk of a stray shower Saturday, but I believe most of the day will be dry as the front dissipates. Sunday should be dry statewide with a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures will trend downward just a bit, with a high in the mid 60s Saturday and low 60s Sunday. Upper air winds simply won’t allow any really cold air in here anytime soon.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Medium range guidance from the 12Z GFS suggests we could see a good rain event Tuesday night into Wednesday of next week (Dec 20-21), and there are no signs of any really serious invasions of cold air through Christmas Day. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas and details.
