Summer Preview Continues

| March 16, 2012 @ 2:10 pm

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today… busy working ongoing strong to severe storms**

SUN, HEAT, STORMS: These are the three words we use often during the months of June, July, and August… but it sure can happen as early as March in Alabama. The hottest March temperature in Alabama is 90 degrees, recorded on March 21, 1907. Many of our March heat records were recorded in 1907, 1919, and the decade of the 1920s.

ACTIVE RADAR: Scroll down for details on the thunderstorm situation… the most active storms at mid-afternoon are over East and Northeast Alabama; stronger storms are capable of producing hail and gusty winds, and the NWS in Huntsville and Birmingham have been issuing a number of severe thunderstorm warnings. The storms are also packing a pretty decent amount of cloud to ground lightning.

Away from the storms, temperatures are generally in the 78-82 degree range… Birmingham reported 80 degrees at 1:00.

OUR WEEKEND: The upper ridge will get stronger, and showers will become fewer in number tomorrow. And, the chance of rain looks so small on Sunday that we won’t need to mention it in the forecast. And, the summer-like weather continues with highs up in the mid 80s both days…. very close to record levels for mid-March in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: A deep upper trough out west will move only slowly eastward. Still looks like a significant severe weather setup for Texas and the Southern Plains Sunday and Monday, but around here our weather still looks very warm and mostly dry Monday and Tuesday under the downstream upper ridge. Highs will hold in the mid 80s. Then, as the upper feature gets closer, rain chances will increase, and heat levels will decrease over the latter half of the week. See the morning Weather Xtreme video for more details on long range ideas.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
