Moisture Levels Begin To Rise Today

| May 14, 2015 @ 6:28 am

MY TINY CORNER OF HEAVEN: Just wanted to let you know there won’t be an afternoon discussion or Weather Xtreme video later today; I will be at the funeral of the great weather legend, J.B. Elliott. Prayers for his wife Judy, and the rest of the family are appreciated. It will be difficult to say so long to such a wonderful friend and mentor. Many of you enjoyed the many years of afternoon blog discussions produced by J.B… and the adventures of “Little Miss Molly”.

DRY START TO THE DAY: Nothing on radar across Alabama this morning; we are beginning the day with temperatures in the 56-61 degree range… we rise into the mid 80s this afternoon with a partly sunny sky. We will maintain the chance of widely scattered showers or storms late this afternoon and early tonight as moist air moves northward, but a decent part of the day will be dry.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: A pool of rich low level moisture will cover Alabama on these three days, and we will clearly need to mention a chance of showers and storms on a daily basis. The better coverage of the showers should come during the afternoon and evening hours, but we can’t rule out a late night or morning shower as well.

On the positive side, there will be some good breaks in the rain, the sun might peek out at times, and we don’t expect any severe weather problems. For the Regions Tradition golf tournament at Shoal Creek, the AHSAA baseball championship games at Montgomery, and the Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, just understand a few rain delays are likely, but the weekend won’t be a “wash-out”.

NEXT WEEK: An approaching surface front will bring a chance of showers and storms Monday, but the latest GFS run now shows dry air moving into North Alabama Tuesday, and it looks like we can drop the mention of showers both Tuesday and Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 5 to 7 hours of sunshine today from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with a few scattered showers and storms possible this afternoon. Then, expect about 2 to 4 hours of sunshine tomorrow through the weekend with a few passing showers or thunderstorms each day. Highs on the immediate coast will remain close to 80 degrees, and the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 80 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
