7pm Update on Hurricane Helene; Watches, Warnings, & Advisories in Effect for Alabama
With the latest shift a little to the west in the projected path of Helene, the following watches, warnings, and advisories may be extended westward as well.
Strong storms are pushing southeast across Alabama this afternoon. The week ahead will be hot and mainly dry.
Heavy rain and storms are moving into the Metro Birmingham area which will exacerbate the flooding situation around the area and further surpass the daily rainfall record we have already topped at BHM. In addition, a line of severe storms is nearing the Alabama/Mississippi border. The threat of severe weather and flooding continues.
Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds up to 60-70 MPH continue to push through the northeastern quarter of the state and has now entered into the Central Alabama counties.
The severe thunderstorm watch has been canceled for all Alabama counties. The severe weather threat has ended for the night. The severe threat has diminished for Central Alabama as the atmosphere stabilizes. The line of showers with some lightning continues pushing southeastward. Expect moderate to heavy rain and the line passes. The watch will probably be canceled in the next 45 minutes.
