At 2:00 PM: Severe Storms Continue To Push Southward Into Central Alabama

| June 28, 2018 @ 2:01 pm

RADAR CHECK AT 1:45 PM
Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds up to 60-70 MPH continue to push through the northeastern quarter of the state and has now entered into the Central Alabama counties. We have a total of 9 severe thunderstorm warnings in effect throughout the area stretching from Hazel Green down to Pell City. Multiple reports of tress down, roof damage, and power outages are coming in from that part of the area… to many to mention at this point.

The entire line of storms contain gusty winds, very heavy rain, and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. If this line is approaching your location, go ahead and get indoors and to your place of safety. Severe thunderstorms can cause damage similar to an EF-0 or EF-1 tornado.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues for all of North Alabama and a good bit of the northern half of Central Alabama until 7:00 PM tonight. Damaging winds of 60-70 MPH, hail up to 1 inch in diameter, very heavy rainfall, and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning is possible as this line of storms continue to push southward.

There continues to be plenty of instability for this line of storms to feed off of, as surface CApE values are ranging from 2500 to nearly 4000 J/kg. Therefore, storms will continue at this strength or possibly strengthen some.

Downdraft CAPE values continue to run over 1000 J/kg out ahead of the storms. This means that damaging downdraft winds of 60-70 MPH will continue to be possible as the line moves into untapped air.

Stay tuned throughout the day for updates. Any warnings and advisories are immediately published to the blog as they are issued by the NWS.
